Greek and Cretan cooking is easier on special diets than most people expect. A lot of it is vegetables, beans, cheese, olive oil and grilled meat or fish, and our menu marks the dishes that are vegetarian (V) and gluten free (GF). This guide shows what you can eat at Sirtaki in Analipsi, near Hersonissos, and what to tell us when you order.
Vegetarian dishes
Many of the best things on a Greek table have no meat in them. These are marked vegetarian on our menu:
- Dips: tzatziki, tyrokafteri (a Cretan dip of feta, garlic, olive oil and chili) and xigalo, a soft Cretan cheese
- Cheese: feta with olive oil and oregano, feta baked with tomatoes and peppers, grilled Talagani goat cheese, and Graviera with thyme honey and sesame
- From the pot and the grill: fava puree with caramelised onions, giant beans baked in tomato sauce, grilled eggplant, grilled mushrooms, grilled seasonal vegetables and dolmades (vine leaves stuffed with herbed rice)
- Salads: Greek salad and a beetroot salad with orange and walnuts
- Vegetable souvlaki: a grilled skewer of mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, eggplant, tomato and onion, served with chips, tzatziki, salad and pita
- Hand-cut chips, fried in olive oil
Several of these dishes contain cheese or yogurt. If you are vegan or avoid dairy, tell your waiter and we will help you choose.
Gluten free dishes
Plenty of what comes off our grill is naturally gluten free. Dishes marked GF on the menu include:
- Black Angus steaks, such as the T-bone, prime rib, fillet, picanha and chuck eye. More about our Black Angus
- Fish and seafood: grilled shrimp, sea bass, grilled octopus and the seafood combinations
- Other mains: Cretan spare ribs, Minoan chicken and our No1 souvlaki
- Starters and sides: the dips, cheeses, salads and chips listed above
The dishes marked GF* are gluten free if you leave out the pita bread. They include the souvlaki, the mixed grill, the chicken fillet and the gyros combinations. Just ask for them without pita.
How to order with a dietary need
1. Check the V and GF marks on our menu, or let our What to Order guide build a dinner. It has filters for no meat, no fish and no gluten.
2. Tell your waiter when you order, especially if you have an allergy. Our kitchen also handles gluten, so traces cannot be completely excluded.
3. Ordering takeaway? The same menu is on our takeaway page.
